Description
Despite the extensive scholarly attention given to the legacy of Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka Kansas (1954), the effects of the landmark ruling on the preparation of teachers have been largely ignored. Addressing this deficiency requires investigation on several fronts, including institutional, regional, national, and disciplinary. Elsewhere (Katz 2005) I have examined the response of teacher education at George Peabody College for Teachers to desegregation. We may compare the actions of Peabody officials to those of their Nashville counterparts. These reactions reveal a highly volatile atmosphere where a misreading of campus, local, or regional attitudes could damage reputations and careers, lose vital resources, and fan embers of resentment into flames of violence.
